Posology and Method of Administration


Furmecil (Tegafur/Gimeracil/Oteracil) should only be prescribed by a qualified health specialist experienced in treating cancer patients with anti-neoplastic medicinal products. 


The standard dose of Tegafur/Gimeracil/Oteracil when used in combination with cisplatin is 25 mg/m2 (as tegafur content) two times a day, morning and evening, for 3 consecutive days followed by 1-week rest (1 treatment cycle). Repeat this Tegafur/Gimeracil/Oteracil treatment cycle every 4 weeks. 


The capsule of Furmecil should not be opened, broken, crushed, or chewed because it may be responsible for affecting the healthy cells when it comes into contact as it is a cytotoxic agent. Swallow the capsule with a sufficient amount of water.


If the respective patient vomits after taking the dose, do not repeat the dose but take the very next dose of Furmecil on the following day as directed.


The standard and reduced Furmecil and cisplatin doses and calculations according to body surface area (BSA) for doses of Furmecil given along with cisplatin. The patient's BSA must be recalculated and the Furmecil dose adjusted accordingly in case a patient’s weight increases or decreases by ≥10% from the one used for the previous calculation of body surface area and the change is clearly not associated with fluid retention. 


The standard dose of cisplatin with this regimen is 75 mg per m2 by intravenous infusion given once every 4 weeks. Cisplatin needs to be discontinued after 6 cycles without withdrawal of Furmecil. If cisplatin is discontinued prior to 6 cycles, Furmecil treatment alone can be resumed when the criteria for initiating it are met. 


The dose of tegafur/gimeracil/oteracil that is reduced due to toxicity reasons must not be increased to the usual dose but can be resumed at one reduced dose level.


Patients treated with Furmecil along with cisplatin should be precisely monitored and laboratory tests, including liver function, haematology, renal function, and serum electrolytes, must be performed frequently. Discontinue treatment if progressive disease or intolerable toxicity is noticed. 


Missed Dose


If a dose of Furmecil (tegafur, gimeracil, and oteracil) is missed do not take the missed dose but continue with the very next following dose. Never take a double dose of Furmecil capsules in order to make up for the missed dose which can be hazardous.
