Daclatasvir for the treatment of Hepatitis C

Daclatasvir is approved for the treatment of adult patients with hepatitis C, an infectious disease that specifically affects the liver, caused by HCV (Hepatitis C Virus). 

This medication works in order to stop the multiplication of hepatitis C virus. It also stops infecting new cells. This helps in reducing the amount of hepatitis C virus in the body and eliminates the virus from the blood over a period of time. 

Daclatasvir is prescribed to be used along with other medications against hepatitis C infection and must never be used by itself. 

Dosage and Administration: The medication daclatasvir always should be taken exactly as your healthcare professional has instructed you. The recommended dose is daclatasvir 60 mg once daily. Swallow the tablet whole. Do not crush/chew the tablet as it has a bit of an unpleasant taste. Daclatasvir may be taken either with or without a meal. 

Certain other drugs may be responsible for interacting with daclatasvir, affecting the levels of daclatasvir in the body. If you are taking any of these medicines, your doctor may decide to change your daily dose of daclatasvir to ensure that the treatment is appropriate and effective for you.

Duration of Treatment: Make sure you take daclatasvir for as long as your healthcare provider has prescribed you to take it. The duration of treatment with daclatasvir tablets 60 mg will be either 12 or 24 weeks. The duration of treatment will depend on whether you have previously been treated for hepatitis C infection, the condition of the liver, and what other drugs you will take with daclatasvir. You should have to take your other drugs for the different time slots.

Possible side effects: Like all drugs, daclatasvir may cause side effects, although not every individual gets them. When daclatasvir is used in combination with sofosbuvir (without ribavirin), the following common side effects have been reported:

  • Difficulty sleeping 
  • Dizziness 
  • Migraine 
  • Nausea (feeling sick)
  • Diarrhoea
  • Abdominal pain 
  • Joint pain
  • Aching or tender muscles

When daclatasvir 60 mg is used in combination with sofosbuvir and ribavirin, the following common side effects have been reported.

  • Decreased appetite 
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Irritability 
  • Dizziness 
  • Migraine 
  • Shortness of breath
  • Cough
  • Nasal congestion
  • Hot flush 
  • Dry skin
  • Unusual hair loss

Warnings and precautions:

  • Patients with daclatasvir 60 mg and develop signs/symptoms of bradycardia must seek medical evaluation promptly.
  • Patients with the history of HBV infection should inform their healthcare provider prior to starting treatment with daclatasvir. 
  • Daclatasvir should not be used by patients who are allergic to it or any of its existing ingredients. 
  • Unprotected sex or sharing razors or toothbrushes should be avoided by patients with daclatasvir therapy. 
  • Patients taking treatment with daclatasvir should avoid pregnancy as it may be responsible for causing the hazardous effect to the fetus. 
  • Nursing should be discontinued while on treatment with daclatasvir 60 mg tablet, as it may be unsafe for the breastfed baby. 

Overdose: In case you accidentally take more daclatasvir tablets than recommended, please contact your healthcare provider at once or contact the nearest hospital for instructions. 

Missed Dose: It is absolutely necessary not to miss/forget a dose of daclatasvir. In case of a missed dose and you notice within 20 hours of the time you usually take daclatasvir, you must take the tablet promptly. Then take the next dose at around the usual time. 

And you notice 20 hours or more after the time you usually take daclatasvir, wait and take the next dose at around the usual time. Do not take a couple of doses (2 doses close together).

Storage: Store daclatasvir tablets at room temperature between 68°F and 77°F (20°C and 25°C). Store it away from the moisture and heat. This medication should be placed away from the pets and childrens. 

Cost: The daclatasvir 60 mg price may vary depending on the wholesaler/pharmacy and of course the brand you choose. Daclatasvir cost may range from 2,838 INR to 17,500 INR for the supply of 28 Tablets.
