Promethazine Syrup: 

This syrup is an antihistamine with sedative properties which is recommended in order to treat allergic reactions such as itching, sneezing, runny nose, itchy or watery eyes, rashes, hives. It is also recommended for treating nausea as well as vomiting caused due to motion sickness and pre and postoperative sedation. This drug is not recommended in patients with asthma and central nervous system depression disorders.

The promethazine syrup shouldn't be given to a child younger than 2 years of age. It can cause serious and sometimes deadly breathing problems. 

Common side effects of promethazine syrup include:

  • drowsiness
  • dizziness
  • constipation
  • blurred vision
  • dry mouth

Promethazine Injection: 

As an injection it is used to treat/prevent vomiting and nausea due to surgery or anesthesia, certain sorts of allergic reactions, pain due to childbirth or surgery, and to sedate patients prior to surgery or any other medical procedures.

The promethazine 25 mg may be given by injection (shots) by your healthcare provider. The injections may cause severe tissue damage. Inform your doctor if you have any burning, redness, pain, or swelling where the medication is going into your body.

Use into a vein should be avoided due to the potential skin damage.

The promethazine injection should not be given to a child younger than 2 years old. 

Common side effects of promethazine injection includes:

  • confusion
  • drowsiness
  • dry mouth
  • low blood pressure
  • nervousness
  • nightmares
  • over excitement
  • ringing in the ears
  • blurred vision
  • fast heartbeat
  • inducing of a relaxed easy state

Promethazine Suppository:

It is indicated for treating allergy signs such as hives, itching, sneezing, itchy skin rashes, itchy or watery eyes and runny nose. 

It also helps in preventing motion sickness, and treats nausea as well as vomiting or pain after surgery. It is also recommended as a sleep aid or sedative. 

In order to use a promethazine suppository, remove foil wrapper and moisten the suppository with the help of water. If it is too soft in order to insert easily, run cold water over it or put it in ice water until it is firm. If it is dry or hard, moisten it with the help of warm water. You should lie on your left side and bend your right knee up towards your chest. Gently push the suppository into your rectum (pointed end first) deep enough in order to prevent it from coming out. Keep lying down for about 5 minutes. It lets the medication dissolve and keeps your suppository from coming out.

The promethazine hcl suppository is not for use in treating symptoms of asthma, pneumonia, or other lower respiratory tract infections.

Promethazine suppository should be avoided in a child younger than two years old.

Common side effects of promethazine hydrochloride suppository may include:

  • drowsiness, dizziness;
  • ringing in your ears;
  • double vision;
  • feeling nervous;
  • dry mouth; or
  • tired feeling
  • sleep problems (insomnia)
