Phenytoin: Precautions and warnings

Phenytoin is prescribed in order to control the seizures (convulsions) in the treatment of epilepsy. It is also recommended for preventing and treating seizures that occur during brain surgery. This medication is an anticonvulsant that acts in the brain tissue to control seizures.

Phenytoin comes in the form of tablets to take by mouth, capsule and suspension to take by mouth, with food.

It comes as a solution for injection to be given by a doctor into the vein. This medicine exist only with your healthcare practitioner's prescription.

Precautions:

Warnings:

  • Intramuscular administration of this drug is not recommended because of the erratic absorption and local tissue reactions.

  • This medicine may increase the risk of suicidal thoughts or behaviour. 
  • Liver damage and toxic hepatitis may occur and can be fatal.
  • Pregnancy is not recommended while on phenytoin therapy. 
  • Infant breast-feeding must be avoided for women with this drug because phenytoin appears to be secreted in low concentrations in the breast milk.
