Difference Between Multiple Myeloma And Leukemia

What is multiple myeloma: 

This is also known as plasma cell myeloma or Kahler's disease. It is a cancer in plasma cells that typically produce antibodies. When there is only one tumor present it is called as plasmacytoma and when more than one then called as multiple myeloma.

The main cause of myeloma is unknown but the major risk factors are obesity,  inheritance chemicals, radiation, etc. With the effect of cancer, there is an abnormality in plasma cells that produces abnormal antibodies that can cause kidney problems.

At the initial stage, there is no sign and symptoms but with the advancement of time bone pain, bleeding, anemia and frequent infections are the common symptoms. Multiple myeloma is diagnosed with the help of blood or urine tests or bone marrow biopsy.
And the medication of multiple myeloma includes:

Chemotherapy- There are several drugs that are used in the treatment of multiple myeloma such as doxorubicin, etoposide, cisplatin, cyclophosphamide, etc. Chemotherapy is preferred over all other medications because of the reason that chemo drugs dissolve in the bloodstream and reach all parts of the body and destroy myeloma cells.

Blood Transfusion- A person suffering from multiple myeloma can have low blood count and does the transfusion of blood become important.

Steroid- This stimulates the hormones that are responsible for tissue growth and repair.

What is Leukemia:

Leukemia is a blood cancer that begins in the bone marrow and causes abnormal blood cells. The cause of leukemia is unknown but there are factors that enhance its rate. These factors are smoking, chemical, radiation, family history, environment, etc.

The major symptoms of leukemia include: bleeding, feeling tired, fever etc. This cancer is diagnosed by blood test or bone marrow biopsy.

There are many four types of leukemia:

  • Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). 
  • Acute myeloid leukemia (AML). 
  • Chronic lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL). 
  • Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML).

Difference Between Multiple Myeloma & Leukemia: 

There are few major differences  that are enlisted below:
  • Multiple myeloma is cancer in plasma cells  while leukemia means B cell cancer.
  • Multiple myeloma results approximately 10% of all hematologic malignancies  and leukemia results 40% of adult leukemias.
  • Plasma cell proliferative capacity in case of multiple myeloma is less while in leukemia it is more.
